Teenage girls are at the highest risk of HIV infection

A recent article in the South African Medical Journal has revealed disturbing new statistics. In 2005 there were 571,000 new infections in South Africa. 69,000 of them were young children between the ages of 2-14, These figures do not include mother to child transmissions. This means they were infected by through child sex abuse.  A further 192,000 were young people aged 15-24.  Of these new infections amongst young people, a distubingly high 90% of them are females.

These statistics reveal the importance of tackling the issues of the sexual abuse of children and young women.
